No-Cost and Confidential Women's Center

If your birth control failed, your mind is likely buzzing with questions: Am I pregnant? If I am, what will I do next? What are my options?

Whatever you’re feeling right now, it’s understandable. However, there are steps you can take right now to gain clarity and control.

This article will highlight those steps. If you’re looking for a safe space to talk, we’re here to provide free and confidential resources and support.

1. Look Out for Early Signs of Pregnancy

If your birth control recently failed, the first step is to watch out for early signs of pregnancy, which include:

  • Missed period
  • Tender, swollen breasts
  • Nausea with/without vomiting
  • Increased urination
  • Fatigue

2. Take a Pregnancy Test

If time passes and you notice any of the early signs of pregnancy—especially a missed period—the next step is to take a pregnancy test. This is the first step toward finding out if you’re pregnant.

If your pregnancy test is positive, it is critical to follow up with an ultrasound. This scan will confirm your pregnancy, tell you how far along you are, and ensure your pregnancy is in the right location.

3. Receive STI Testing

If the condom broke, it’s also vital to receive STI testing. Many common STIs don’t present with physical symptoms, which means it’s possible to have one and not know it. However, if you unknowingly have an STI, it can still cause reproductive damage. And if you’re pregnant, an STI can cause potentially life-threatening harm.

We provide free STI testing so you can get the answers you deserve.
