Are You Thinking about Abortion?

Abortion may seem like the simplest answer out of an unintended pregnancy but there are no easy answers. Maybe you don’t want to have an abortion but feel it is your only choice. Many consider having an abortion because they do not have the support or resources they need to have their baby. There might be people pressuring you to have an abortion that you don’t want.

what are the different types of abortion?

The type of abortion done is based on how far a woman is in her pregnancy. The two main types of abortion are medical abortion and surgical abortion, each terminating an existing pregnancy. Here is what to know about each abortion type, along with the risks…

Medical Abortion (The Abortion Pill)

Medical abortion is called by many different names like the abortion pill, at-home abortion, self-administered abortion, etc. This type of abortion procedure involves two different drugs: mifepristone and misoprostol.

Who Is Eligible for Medication Abortion?

According to the FDA, the abortion pill is approved for women up to 10 weeks. Otherwise, women who are more than 70 days pregnant would need a surgical abortion instead.

It’s important to note that women with an ectopic pregnancy, who have an IUD, or other health conditions should not take the abortion pill. To be aware of any of these health complications, pregnancy confirmation is necessary.

What Is Surgical Abortion?

Surgical abortion takes place at an abortion clinic and involves undergoing surgery to terminate a pregnancy. There are a few different types of surgical abortion methods, including a suction curettage abortion (D&C) and a D&E.

Types of Surgical Abortion

A suction curettage abortion, also known as a vacuum aspiration abortion or D&C, is done in the first 12-13 weeks of pregnancy. A tube is inserted into your cervix (the opening of your uterus) and suction is used to remove the pregnancy.

Abortion done in the second trimester is a dilation and evacuation (D&E) abortion. It’s normally done after 13 weeks of pregnancy. During a D&E, the doctor opens your cervix and uses forceps or other surgical tools to remove the pregnancy.

What Are the Risks?

Like any serious medical procedure, an abortion involves many possible complications and risks. According to the Mayo Clinic, common risks of medical abortion include infection, incomplete abortion, heavy and prolonged bleeding, and more.

With surgical abortion come risks like incomplete abortion, infection, damage to the womb/cervix, uterine perforation, excessive bleeding, and more.

It’s important to consider these risks before moving forward with an abortion.

Before An Abortion

To determine if you are eligible for abortion, pregnancy confirmation is needed! A clinical pregnancy test and ultrasound are vital to understanding more about your pregnancy. An ultrasound is necessary to know how far along you are, the viability of your pregnancy, and the location (whether your pregnancy is growing within your uterus or not).
